First attempt to obtain funding for a synchrotron light source in Spain.
The ALBA Synchrotron project was approved and funded in equal parts by the Spanish and the Catalonian Administration.
For that purpose, the Consortium for the Construction, Equipping and Exploitation of the Synchrotron Light Source (CELLS) is created to manage the ALBA Synchrotron. Joan Bordas is appointed as General Director of ALBA.
Construction begins, after a few years dedicated to the design and the training of a new team of experts coming from Spain and abroad.
First electrons out of the ALBA LINAC electron gun are seen.
The linear accelerator (LINAC) is installed.
Installation of the Booster and Storage ring.
First operational test of the Booster is performed. Results show that all the components, subsystems and equipment perform in accordance with the specifications.
ALBA Synchrotron is inaugurated by the President of the Spanish Government, José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero, and the President of the Generalitat de Catalunya, José Montilla.

For the first time the beam arrives to a beamline (MISTRAL).
First friendly user at the BOREAS beamline (an external researcher helping with the commissioning of the facility).
BOREAS, MSPD, XALOC, NCD and CIRCE beamlines receive their first official users.
At the end of 2012, appears the first ALBA publication, a report containing data collected from the MSPD beamline.
In July, Caterina Biscari is appointed as the new director of the ALBA Synchrotron.
By the beginning of 2013, the seven beamlines have already received official users.
On June, Manuel Vázquez, from the Institute of Materials Science of Madrid (CSIC), was the 1.000th researcher using the ALBA Synchrotron facility. He and his team analyzed magnetic nanowires at the CIRCE beamline.
In September, they change from decay mode injection to top-up injection (continuous injections).
The 8th beamline is inaugurated: MIRAS.
The construction of four new beamlines starts: LOREA, XAIRA, NOTOS and FAXTOR. They are expected to be all in operation by 2023.
During the first run of 2019, the storage ring achieves a new record: delivering 100% of the beamtime.
In September, the Synchrotron starts its regular operation at nominal current: 250 mA.
The ALBA Synchrotron celebrates its 10th anniversary.
ALBA initiates its upgrade process to become a 4th generation facility with the project ALBA II.
